Washing and Caring for Children's Clothes

Simple habits that keep colours bright and clothes ready for the next sibling.
Children's clothes get dirty fast, so good washing habits keep them looking new for longer.
Read the care label first. It tells you the washing temperature, whether the garment can be tumble-dried and whether it can be ironed. Follow it, especially for printed designs and appliqués.
Wash new clothes before the first wear. This removes dust and anything left from packing and handling, and it is a good habit for children with sensitive skin.
Separate colours. Wash dark and bright colours separately from whites for the first few washes, because new colours can run.
Turn clothes inside out. This protects prints, embroidery and appliqués from rubbing, and keeps the outside looking fresh.
Use a mild detergent and rinse well. Leftover detergent can bother sensitive skin, so use the amount the packaging recommends and make sure the clothes are well rinsed.
Deal with stains early. Rinse a fresh stain with cold water as soon as you can, before washing, and avoid hot water on stains that you are not sure about because heat can set them.
Dry and store well. Dry clothes completely before putting them away, and fold knitwear instead of hanging it so that it keeps its shape. Clothes in good condition can be passed on to a younger brother or sister.
