Soft Fabrics and Safe Details: What to Look For in Kids' Clothes
Comfort and safety checks you can do in a minute before you buy or before the first wear.
A child's clothes are worn all day, so comfort matters as much as the look. A few simple checks help you choose well.
The fabric. Soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton are comfortable for everyday wear, especially in warm weather and for babies. Read the label to see the fabric composition and the care instructions, and ask us if the material of a product is not written. If your child has sensitive skin, choose soft fabrics and avoid rough labels and seams that rub.
Seams and labels. Run your hand along the inside of the garment. Flat seams and soft labels are more comfortable than thick seams or stiff tags, which can irritate the neck and the waist.
Fastenings and decorations. Check that buttons, snaps, zips and any appliqués are firmly attached. Small parts that come loose can be a hazard for babies and toddlers who put things in their mouths, so check them from time to time, and especially on baby clothes.
Cords and drawstrings. Long cords around the neck and hood of clothes for young children can catch on objects while playing. Prefer designs without long loose cords for little ones, or shorten them.
Ease of dressing. Wide necks, stretchy waistbands and simple fastenings help children dress themselves and make changing quicker for you.
What suits the season. Light layers are easier to adjust than one heavy piece, because children move a lot and warm up quickly.
